Highland Competitor Excels at State UIL Academic Competition

Pictured is Maura Chapman, a junior at Highland, receiving one of her two state medals. She competed at the UIL State Academics Meet on May 4th & 5th in Headline Writing, Spelling & Vocabulary, and Ready Writing. She placed 2nd in Headline, 6th in Spelling & Vocabulary, and she was in the top 10 for Ready. Maura has attended a UIL state competition twice before. She placed 4th in Headline at State her freshman year, and she placed 2nd with her partner, Brooklynn Petty, in the UIL State CX Debate Meet this year. She hopes to head back to state her senior year for Academics, CX Debate, and One Act Play.



Highland Earns State Runner-Up in UIL 1A Cross-Examination Debate

At the 2018 1A UIL State CX Debate Tournament, Chapman and Petty competed against teams across the state, debating a total of 8 rounds. The topic of the year was, "The United States federal government should substantially increase its funding and/or regulations for primary and/or secondary schools." The duo spent long hours researching and practicing with their coach, Leigh Petty, who has been coaching CX debate for five years. The two hope to return to and win the State competition in the coming year.
