For the third consecutive year, Highland ISD received an Exemplary rating on the Texas Education Agency accountability system. Exemplary is the highest rating on the state accountability rating system. Only 20 districts were rated Exemplary for 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10 school years.

Two hundred thirty-nine districts were rated Exemplary for 2009-10 out of over 1100 districts in the state. Highland is the one of six Exemplary districts in the Abilene area for 2009-10.
Spring 2010 TAKS Scores
HISD students again performed at a high level on this spring’s Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) tests. Preliminary scores indicate that over 90% of students in grades 3-11 as a whole passed the five subject area tests. As was the case in 2008 and 2009, all students who took the Writing exam in grades 4 and 7 passed. Congratulations to the HISD faculty and students for their accomplishments.

Criteria for this award are:
40% or more low-income students in 2009-10
Met federal Adequate Yearly Progress in 2008 and 2009
Rated Exemplary in 2009
Rated Exemplary or Recognized in 2008
Rated Exemplary or Recognized in 2007.

Highland is one of thirteen campuses in the Abilene area to receive this recognition. This is the second consecutive year for Highland to be a Distinguished Performance school.
SchoolReach Notification System
For 2008-09, Highland ISD is continuing the SchoolReach telephone broadcast system that enables school personnel to notify all households and parents by phone within minutes of an emergency or unplanned event that causes early dismissal, school cancellation or late start. SchoolReach may also be used from time-to-time to communicate general announcements or reminders. HISD will continue to report school closings due to inclement weather on local radio and television stations and will use the SchoolReach system as an overlay to the public announcements.

SchoolReach simultaneously calls all listed phone numbers in our parent contact list and delivers a recorded message from the superintendent or another school administrator. The service delivers the message to both live answer and answering machines. No answers and busy signals will be automatically retried twice in 15 minute intervals after the initial call.
