Several cases of H1N1 flu have been detected in Nolan County. At this time, students who are not ill can safely come to school. Highland ISD has a plan in place to deal with influenza outbreaks, and we will keep you updated with any important information.
The Sweetwater – Nolan County Health Department (SNCHD) will provide information in the next few days regarding availability of the H1N1 vaccine and vaccination clinic locations. Vaccinations through the SNCHD are free. Your local health care provider should also be able to provide the vaccine.
To keep the flu from spreading, we ask you to keep sick children home. Any children at school who are sick will be sent home. It is very important that any child with flu-like symptoms see a physician. Nolan County health providers can perform a test that quickly determines whether a person has the flu or not.
Public health officials want you to protect yourself and your family against H1N1 flu. Here are some ways to stop the spread of germs and sickness:
Keep sick children who at home. Don't send them to school.
Teach your children to wash their hands with soap and water for 20 seconds. Clean your hands after coughing or sneezing. Use soap and water and/or an alcohol-based hand cleaner.
Clean common household surfaces (tables, bathrooms, sinks, door knobs, etc.) with disinfectant wipes.
Teach your children to cover coughs and sneezes with tissues or by coughing into the inside of the elbow. Dispose of used tissues properly.
Don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean.
Teach your children to stay at least three feet away from people who are sick.
